At Woodward Academy, cross country is a team sport. As the second high school sport established at Woodward Academy, it has consistently performed with many of the top schools in the state. In its first two seasons (’06 and ‘07), the cross country team qualified for the Iowa High School State Meet, annually held in Fort Dodge, Iowa. This set a precedent of excellence for not only its sport, but for the athletic department as a whole.
The 2012 team surpassed that standard when they won the WCAC Conference meet, led by the individual conference champion Juanito Hernandez, and earned Coach of the Year honors, on their way again to qualifying as a team. The 2015 squad continued that excellent tradition, proving that cross country is a team competition. Allowing for a total of 30 runners having participated at the Iowa High School State Cross Country Meet.
