Head Coach: Matt Ruiz
The season often starts cold, wet, and rainy, but as the track & field season moves toward the end of May, the goal has always been clear for the Woodward Academy team: win meets and qualify for the State Meet annually held in Des Moines. Drake Stadium is one of the top facilities in the nation and has hosted collegiate and Olympic qualifying events.
Since 2007, the Knights have qualified for the state meet every year. In total, 50 athletes have competed at the co-ed state meet, the largest high school event in the country. The three-day event traditionally has over 20,000 spectators, watching the best in Iowa compete on the iconic blue oval. Woodward Academy has had two state champions in its history: Ronnie Henderson in the 200m dash (2007), and most recently, Darius Scott-Crayton in the 110 High Hurldes (2014).
